Anthropic has opened a research preview of Claude Duet, a standalone AI agent app that monitors connected business tools, flags work that needs attention, and completes tasks in the background. Built around Claude Opus 5.5, it is initially available by waitlist to U.S. Claude Pro and Max subscribers.

Duet targets professionals and small-business owners managing work across multiple apps. Rather than waiting for a user to start a chat, it sends a morning brief, checks connected accounts throughout the day, and reaches out when it finds something requiring a decision. It can also take assignments by text or voice, such as scheduling meetings, building financial forecasts, and web apps.

The [research preview](https://x.com/claudeai/status/2112984664256241837?ref=tao.media) pairs that proactive behavior with approval requirements. Duet can read, draft, and prepare work independently, but it must ask before sending messages, making payments, signing documents, or deleting anything.

## A Cloud Agent That Checks In First

Duet runs on its own cloud virtual machine with a browser. A task can continue even when the user's laptop or phone is switched off, and Duet sends a notification when the work is finished or needs review. Users describe the assignment, and the agent determines which connected apps and steps to use.

Existing Claude memory, skills, and connected apps carry over into Duet. Requests and replies remain in one ongoing thread, allowing a short administrative task and a longer project to share the same conversational history.

Duet monitors periodically rather than continuously; it checks connected accounts every few hours because more frequent checks would consume plan limits faster. Users can specify what they want to hear about and how often. That interval also means it can miss an item that arrives between check-ins.

Opus 5.5 decides what warrants an interruption, what can wait, and when it needs permission. In an early-access example published by Anthropic, real estate broker Jess Provencher used Duet's morning rundown to catch a property showing entered on the wrong calendar day.

## Business Work Across Connected Apps

Duet can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. Its business workflows combine information retrieval, preparation, and approved actions across services that already hold a company's operational data.

For accounts receivable, it can check Intuit QuickBooks or Stripe for unpaid invoices and draft reminders. In Gusto, it can prepare and run payroll with hours, bonuses, and reimbursements filled in, subject to the product's approval controls. It can use HubSpot contact and deal history to draft follow-ups, or prepare agreements in Docusign for review and signature.

Other examples include finding missed Gmail and Slack messages, preparing LinkedIn job postings for users to edit and approve, creating launch campaigns in Canva, and setting up and managing Shopify stores.

Purchasing uses a separate confirmation flow. Duet confirms the item with the user, and Stripe's Link wallet requests approval for the spending. Payment then uses a virtual card rather than sharing the user's real card number. Duet also supports checkout through Shopify's Shop Pay.

Anthropic plans to add a richer Shopify visual editor for designing and previewing storefronts before publication. It also plans permission-based sign-in using credentials saved in 1Password.

## Approval Gates and Sensitive Information

An agent that reads across business accounts and can send information elsewhere needs controls over both actions and disclosures. In its [Duet launch details](https://claude.com/resources/articles/claude-duet?ref=tao.media), Anthropic sets out separate protections for credentials, tool use, and outgoing messages.

Credential handling follows the design used for Claude Managed Agents, keeping passwords and sign-in tokens out of Duet's direct view. Anthropic's auto mode classifier checks actions, while prompt-injection defenses draw on its browser-use research. Prompt injection involves instructions embedded in content an agent encounters, such as a web page or message, that attempt to redirect its behavior.

A new dedicated classifier and safety system prompt check each message for sensitive information. They reject requests to share the strictest category, including credit card numbers and government identification. Other sensitive information, such as health details or personal finances, can be sent only when the user has explicitly instructed Duet to share it.

Human approval remains a separate requirement for consequential actions. Duet shows what it intends to do and waits before sending, paying, signing, or deleting. Trading securities and moving money between accounts are prohibited even with approval, and users can disconnect apps to revoke access.

Anthropic says internal red teams and an external firm penetration-tested Duet. The product is also covered by its public bug bounty program.

Anthropic says the preview can still misread conversations or misjudge urgency. Its core functionality is focused on work, with personal errands such as booking tickets less developed, and users cannot yet view its browser.

## Access and Shared Usage Limits

Duet is available as a separate iOS and Android app and on the web at [claude.ai](https://claude.ai/?ref=tao.media). The [waitlist](https://claude.com/product/claude-duet?ref=tao.media) is initially limited to U.S. Pro and Max subscribers; Team and Enterprise plans are not included in the preview.

Access is included in eligible plans, but background work draws from the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. Monitoring checks count toward that allowance, and complex assignments, such as financial models or presentation decks, require more model turns and background processing than a typical conversation.
