Mentat Launches Robotics Index With Three Bittensor Subnet Holdings

The automated basket gives TAO holders sector exposure without managing individual subnet allocations.

Table of Contents

Mentat has launched a robotics sector index for Bittensor, giving TAO holders an automated way to allocate capital across three robotics-focused subnets, OpenRoboto, Swarm, and Nepher Robotics.

The basket follows Mentat’s sector-index model, holding the top three eligible subnets by market cap and rebalancing automatically as the rankings change.

Users can access the robotics index through the platform, with an estimated APY at time of writing of ~50.3%.

How Selection and Weighting Work

Mentat uses two separate calculations to determine which subnets enter a sector index and how capital is distributed among them.

Under its sector methodology, Mentat determines membership using an exponential moving average (EMA) of market capitalization. An EMA smooths observations over time while giving more weight to recent values, so selection follows a smoothed ranking rather than a single market snapshot.

When a new subnet enters the EMA-based top three, Mentat adds it to the index and reallocates the portfolio, investing all capital allocated to the sector across those three holdings.

Position sizes use a different input, an EMA of subnet prices.

Higher-priced subnets receive a larger allocation, making this a price-weighted basket within a market-cap-selected group (rather than an equal-weight portfolio). Mentat also selects validators on each subnet to manage the staking side of the allocation.

Eligibility Comes Before Ranking

The eligible universe extends beyond the three launch holdings. Mentat said Robotensor is also eligible, allowing it to enter the basket if it reaches the required ranking.

Mentat maintains official subnet links, cross-checks them against Bittensor’s official Discord, and reviews sector classifications weekly. The team reviews proposed additions, removals, and classification changes before applying them.

Responding to a question about THOR, Mentat said the project was not yet eligible because its GitHub was not public and it had not claimed its channel on the official Bittensor Discord. The team said THOR would become eligible once both requirements were met.
