Runway Adds In-Chat Image and Video Generation to Grok Bot

The plugin connects Grok Bot conversations to Runway’s models and asset library through an existing Runway account.

Runway's image and video generation tools now work inside Grok Bot through a plugin, so users can create media without leaving the conversation. Users connect an existing Runway account, describe what they want, and pay for generations with their Runway credits rather than configuring an API key.

The connection uses Model Context Protocol, or MCP, which lets an AI assistant access external tools. Grok Bot handles the conversation and calls Runway's generation tools, and Runway saves completed assets to the user's library alongside work made in the Runway app.

Connecting Runway to Grok Bot

Users start in Grok Bot, open Marketplace at the bottom of the sidebar, select Plugins, and search for Runway. After selecting Add, they authenticate with their Runway account. The Runway for Grok Bot plugin page offers a direct installation route.

Once connected, the bot can choose an appropriate Runway tool for an image or video request. Users can also ask for a particular model rather than leaving that selection to the assistant. That puts model selection and generation in the same conversation instead of a separate visit to Runway's interface.

Runway's MCP service also works with ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Replit, and other compatible agents. Across those connections, users sign in with a Runway account, and ChatGPT, Grok Bot, and Cursor offer plugin-based setup.

The shared asset library gives teams continuity between chat-based generation and work in Runway itself. MCP uses the same underlying systems as the Runway app, and generations stay in the account's library rather than existing only in a chat thread.

Models, Credits, and Media Tools

The available models span Runway's own systems and third-party models. Runway currently lists Gen-4.5, Gen-4 Image, Gen-4 Turbo, Seedance 2.5, GPT Image 2, Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1, and Nano Banana Pro on its MCP page. Access depends on the user's Runway plan.

Generation costs follow the Runway app's credit system, where each image or video draws from the account balance and consumption depends on the model, resolution, and other settings. Explore Mode does not work through MCP, so users spend credits even if their plan includes that mode in the app.

Runway has also expanded the tools available through MCP beyond image and video generation. Its recent product updates include:

  • Seedream 5.0 Flash, added October 12, for 1K or 2K images generated from text or up to 10 reference images.
  • Fish Audio Drama 3, added October 14, for script-based voiceovers with seven voices and delivery cues.
  • BiRefNet v2, added October 15, for automatic background removal.
  • Mirelo SFX 2.0, also added October 15, for producing a separate sound-effects track from a clip and a text description.

Connecting Other MCP Clients

For clients without a dedicated plugin, users can add the Runway MCP server endpoint in their agent's settings and sign in. In managed company workspaces, an administrator may need to add the connector before individual users can authenticate.

Runway's connection guide specifies Streamable HTTP as the supported transport. SSE and stdio do not work; an SSE connection returns a 405 error. Clients that offer a transport selector should use HTTP or Streamable HTTP.
