Targon has now officially launched TargonOS, bringing rentable confidential GPU and CPU virtual machines to targon.com and making Targon the first permissionless compute network to offer VM rentals instead of containers.
Customers can now provision dedicated VMs with root access, hardware-attested isolation and end-to-end encryption, allowing developers to run sensitive code, data and AI workloads across distributed infrastructure without exposing them to machine operators.
The launch changes how workloads are deployed across Targon’s network. Under the previous TargonVM model, miners hosted confidential virtual machines containing customer workloads. TargonOS instead securely provisions a dedicated VM for each workload, reducing miners’ direct role in managing confidential environments.
Each VM includes encrypted storage, root-level control and a customizable software stack. Hardware attestation verifies that the machine has booted with approved software before releasing encryption keys; if the system has been altered, the machine fails attestation and cannot access the workload.
Targon first introduced TargonOS in March as a way to expand its confidential compute network beyond specialized datacenter infrastructure. The operating system is designed to support a broader range of hardware while preserving protections through encrypted VMs and hardware-backed verification.
The live release now gives users another option alongside Targon’s Intel TDX-backed infrastructure, allowing them to select confidential GPU or CPU resources based on the security and performance requirements of their workloads.
