Four Google DeepMind Gemini 4 Argon agents defeated Minecraft’s Ender Dragon after 27 hours and 14 minutes in a survival world, writing their own programs and coordinating without human intervention. The team completed the run through code and text (rather than a screen), producing 2,783 JavaScript programs as it gathered resources, built portals, and fought the game’s final boss.
Google DeepMind shared the result as a demonstration of sustained, collaborative agent work. The agents chose their own division of labor, exchanged 229 chat messages, and recovered from 605 deaths before winning.
The experiment tests whether general-purpose coding agents can maintain a plan across thousands of dependent actions over more than a day. In their technical report, the researchers claim the first end-to-end autonomous Minecraft completion using the standard Mineflayer library without pre-scouted world seeds or additional human-written game tools.

Playing Minecraft Through JavaScript
The four players (janesick, gyldenia, auratian, and bulicame) each ran as a separate instance of the same general-purpose coding agent on its own cloud machine. Their game-specific objective was a short instruction to defeat the Ender Dragon; researchers supplied no strategy, assigned roles, or ready-made skill library.
Each agent wrote a JavaScript program, executed it through the open-source Mineflayer library and its pathfinding plugin, and read back text describing its position, inventory, health, actions, and errors. Mineflayer provided basic operations such as walking, digging, crafting, and attacking. The agents had to decide how to combine those operations into a working strategy.

This interface supplied exact information about nearby blocks and creatures, including blocks behind solid rock and the dragon’s internal state. The pathfinding plugin also handled route planning around obstacles. The result therefore measures programming and coordination through a structured interface, rather than visual gameplay with a keyboard and mouse.
The server ran Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.4 in survival mode on Easy difficulty, with cheat commands disabled. Argon already had Minecraft and Mineflayer knowledge from training; the task was to turn that knowledge into functioning code and coordinated action.
The run follows Google’s broader rollout of Gemini 4 Argon, which includes access through the Gemini app, Search, Antigravity, and the API.
A Team Built Around Shared Tools and Recovery
Roles began forming about 10 minutes into the session. Gyldenia gathered food and supplies, janesick made tools, bulicame mined for diamonds, and auratian worked on the Nether portal. Those jobs evolved as the team moved through the game.

Their general agent instructions encouraged reusable tools and shared memory, but left the implementation to them. They built 42 helper functions, including routines for staying afloat, counting items, and stopping leftover code after a timeout. One workaround for Mineflayer’s crafting behavior appeared in 655 programs written across all four players.
Shared notes stored coordinates, hazards, and lessons from failed attempts. Teammates also checked each other’s reports. When janesick claimed to be returning with blaze powder immediately after dying, gyldenia flagged the contradiction. Auratian separately corrected a false success message generated by its own code.
Finding the stronghold required another kind of programming. Janesick threw two Eyes of Ender (items that fly toward the underground structure) from different positions, sampled their trajectories every 50 milliseconds, and calculated where the lines crossed. The estimate was 43 meters from the actual portal room, roughly 1.3 kilometers from the village base.
When auratian drowned carrying all 12 Eyes of Ender, teammates sent bulicame the location and the deadline before the dropped items would disappear. Bulicame recovered them with two and a half minutes to spare.
The team activated the End portal 13 hours and 17 minutes into the run.
The Dragon Fight Took Nearly 14 Hours
Reaching the End did not produce a quick victory. The dragon killed the team 69 times as the agents inspected its behavior, adjusted their tactics, and recorded instructions for subsequent attempts.
About 21 hours into the session, auratian identified the central obstacle. Ten crystals on obsidian pillars were restoring the dragon’s health. It worked out a way to reach them without a pickaxe by stacking dirt beside a pillar, breaking the crystal, and digging back down by hand.

The team destroyed all 10 crystals over the next four hours and 40 minutes, with gyldenia removing six. Thirty-nine minutes after the last crystal fell, bulicame landed the final blow with just 2.5 of its 20 health points remaining.
The detailed run account records a median program duration of 33.5 seconds, with 22% of programs ending in an error.
Six server restarts interrupted play for about 20 minutes in total.
