TAO Tests $200 Breakout as Bittensor Ecosystem News Builds Around AI Narrative

Bittensor’s token is ranging below the key $200 level, even as recent subnet progress keeps the ecosystem in focus.

TAO is testing another attempt to reclaim the $200 area after a volatile stretch for AI-linked crypto assets, with Bittensor’s token still trading below several major moving averages despite signs of short-term stabilization.

TAO has fallen 2.08% over the prior 24 hours and traded around $191.29 at time of writing, leaving TAO caught between improving short-term momentum and a broader chart structure that has not yet turned decisively bullish.

The token has been in a downtrend since reaching $291 on June 26, soon after the network halted emissions for dozens of subnets.

Bittensor will now review subnet emission eligibility every week, removing inactive networks and restoring active teams on a case-by-case basis.

Building Underlying Momentum

Today, there's plenty of context beyond the chart as well.

The most important recent protocol-level development is Root Reborn, which went live through Bittensor’s v4.4.1 upgrade. The change moves root yield away from automatic TAO conversion and toward validator-linked subnet baskets, creating a more direct connection between root staking, subnet alpha exposure, and validator positioning.

The v4.4.1 upgrade moves root yield from automatic TAO conversion into validator-linked subnet baskets, setting up a new phase for TAO, subnets, and root validators.

Bittensor has also benefited from a run of breakout subnet-level stories.

To start, Actual Computer was added as a native inference provider for Hermes Agent, giving users of Nous Research’s open-source agent stack a way to route AI model requests through Actual’s infrastructure.

That followed viral attention around Engy, a Bittensor inference subnet that drew attention after founder Ning said the team served Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter open model, on 80 RTX 5090 GPUs—an announcement that has over 1 million views on X.

Engy’s pitch is that it can serve large open models and provide verified inference so users can confirm they received output from the model they requested.

Discretion Between Signals

TAO’s current moment splits between market structure and ecosystem development.

After nearly two months of downtrend, the chart can be best described as choppy, lacking any meaningful confirmation that we'll see a swing in direction.

The ecosystem story is different.

We're increasingly seeing moments of the Bittensor narrative, and the network's underlying technical progress, reaching the mainstream AI conversation.

As experienced traders oftentimes say, the longer the accumulation period, the greater the upswing. For now, and (at least, in my opinion) until we see a sustained break above $200 into $220 territory, that accumulation and its chop will continue to be the picture we see.
